The principal rock of the Tahoe area is granitic, meaning all intrusive rock ranging in composition from granite to gabbro. The principal granitic rock is granodiorite (typical Sierra granite). The rock is found in varied forms ranging from solid, compact, smooth rock (Sugarloaf) to rotten and dangerously loose rock such as is found on Maggie's Peak. At least one crag has unique rock forms: Lover's Leap. This crag is stripped every few feet from bottom to top with continuous ledges ranging in width from less than one inch to more than two feet.
