Donner Summit - North

This is the first of a group of "new" areas which lie along the Pacific Crest Trail and off of the I-80 corridor.

This area is located just off the Pacific Crest Trail, north of the main Summit climbing areas. To get to these areas, park in the trailhead parking lot (for the Pacific Crest Trail) just east of the Boreal ski area (not the I-80 Rest Stop area.)

Map notes:

  • The BLACK trail is the "Pacific Crest Trail"
  • The RED trail is the older trail and has been mostly abandoned.
  • The PURPLE trail represents both the "North Ridge" trail and the 3rd class trail (descent) to the lower Central Wall.
Area Map
After almost a 1/4 mile, and passing two branches in the trail which go to the left (to the I-80 rest stop), you will come to a pond. By hiking up the slab on the right side of the pond you will come to this short wall, behind the pond.
The areas are "The Lower Walls", "The PCT Section" and "The Upper Areas".

The Lower Walls
After hiking south for about 10 minutes, and about 50 yards south of where the Pacific Crest Trail splits to go north and south, is this short section of rock hidden about 20 yards off the right side of the trail.

If you break off the trail, and hike east along the "North Ridge", you will end up at the top of the "Outer Prow" of the Lower Walls. If you stay in botton the ravine, you will end up at the base of the prow.

Continued hiking south along the trail (for another 10 to 15 minutes) will bring you to a partially hidden wall (Green Crystals and Moss) in the middle of the PCT Section. This wall is about 1 mile from the parking area. Green Cystals and Moss
Another 5 minutes down the trail brings you to the far left end of the PCT Section and this steep wall.
